English Pronunciation for Japanese People

Japanese people are known for struggling with the /l/ and /r/ sounds of English. Unlike English, Japanese only has one set of sounds that falls somewhere inbetween /l/ and /r/.

ラ リ ル レ ロ

Japanese people tend to struggle with words such as ‘library’, ‘really’ and ‘brilliant’, etc.

In this course, we start with a simple placement exercise to help you feel the positioning of the articulators. The /l/ sound requires brief contact with the alveolar ridge, whereas with the /r/ sound the tongue should curl without making any contact.

We’ll then move onto a muscle memory exercise. These are very simple and basic exercises to help you get a feel for the positioning of the articulators when combining the different vowel sounds.

This is followed by simple word repetition exercises. We’ll repeat vocabulary containing the /l/ & /r/ sounds in a slow and controlled manner. Finally, we’ll practise phrase repetition exercises with vocabalary containing both the /l/ & /r/ sounds.

This course uses spaced repetition help you listen, repeat and absorb the sounds with precision. Post your questions in the discussion panel and I’ll do my best to respond quickly!
