One of the major hurdles I encounter is the perception people have of digital courses. For many, it immediately creates resistance.
People often view digital courses as some kind of marketing scam: “Buy my eBook or digital course and get rich”. Every other famous YouTuber, Instagrammer, and TikToker has a free eBook or course for you to buy. It is seen as an upsell, a product with little depth designed to extract more money from customers while offering very little value in return.
This perception is unfortunate. Many times I have had new students come to me who resisted the course and just wanted the private lessons. This always tends to result in frustration.
However, my materials are not just some random exercises that I slapped together in a single weekend using a webcam. My Complete Course took over five years to put together. I used a range of professional equipment and software including professional video cameras, lighting, audio, studio equipment, and a full video editing workstation. Part of the reason why I was able to put this together is my background in video production and editing.
I see digital courses as the modern version of a textbook. Education is changing. We used to study textbooks, then we studied textbooks with CDs or DVDs. Now we have the modern digital course which can be distributed through a website or app. It is simply a medium used to deliver a learning experience. And the current medium offers possibilities to create a much more interactive and efficient learning experience compared to before.
For me, the courses allowed me to create a highly efficient learning programme for my students. Why spend a whole lesson explaining the International Phonetic Alphabet and the vowel sound chart when the student can study the pre-recorded content that I created? Why spend 20 minutes during the lesson testing the student’s ability to distinguish between the different phonemes of English, when they can do the pre-recorded listening exercises?
The purpose for me was efficiency, to help the student achieve as much as possible outside the classroom. My Complete Course takes an average of 60 hours to complete. Students take on average three months to complete it when studying at a moderate pace.
